The Government of Canada through the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada provided the City of Sault Ste. Marie with funding to create a Local Immigration Partnership in our community intended to research and improve services for newcomers to Sault Ste. Marie.

We ask that if you are a recent newcomer to Sault Ste. Marie that you please take a few minutes and fill out the following questionnaire. This will help the Local Immigration Partnership to gather further information about existing services and how we can improve on these services to help you through the process of moving to Sault Ste. Marie. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we would like to thank you for taking some time to help our City develop in assisting newcomer to Sault Ste. Marie.

Almost 600 Ontario Schools now have full-day kindergarten programs. Full-day kindergarten can help children do better in school as they get older. All schools in Ontario should have full-day kindergarten by 2015.

Durham Region now has the Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program. Settlement workers can help your family learn about the Ontario school system. They can also help you find services in your community.

Starting September 1, 2010, there are new credit card rules in Canada. In some cases, companies that give loans and lines of credit have to follow the new rules too. The government hopes these new rules will protect consumers from unexpected costs.

The EQAO just released the average test scores for all students who took the test in the 2009-10 school year. If your child took an EQAO test last school year, she or he will get an Individual Student Report (ISR) this fall.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is making some important changes to these programs. For example, CIC will review job offers more carefully and employers who exploit workers will face greater penalties. The changes come into effect April 1, 2011.
